I live in an area where there are a lot of summer residents, and it's getting near that time of year when they start closing up their cottages and dumping or just leaving their cats and dogs behind.

Does this happen in other places? How can anyone think it's okay to get a kitten or puppy and then just leave them? It's beyond my comprehension, and yet, every fall, there are strays. Mostly cats, but dogs too. My sister-in-law was driving home once and found a dog sitting on the side of the road, miles from any residence, like someone had just opened their door and dumped him, and he was just sitting there waiting for them to come back and get him. So sad.
