Desperate for help concerning a wound on my Cat

I hope someone here can help me, or at least give me some good advice on what to do.

2 weeks ago, I took my cat in to the vet because he had a quarter size wound on his neck.  They determined (or made a best guess) that he had been bitten by a spider...and it had abcessed, then drained, and due to him scratching it...opened up the hole where it had drained. They cleaned him all up, shaved his neck, sedated him, put in a drainage tube and stitched the wound closed. I brought him home the next day with antibiotics to give him and instructions to return in 5 days to have the tube removed and 10 days to have the sutures removed. for this procedure, I paid over $200. I had to scrape and pinch to pay for this, and it put me back quite a bit because it was unexpected.

So today I took him in to have the sutures removed...14 days later..4 more than they told me, because I couldnt get time from work to do it. They removed the stitches (all of them) and then came out and told me that the wound was still open and they wanted to sedate him AGAIN and RE-stich it. to the tune of $150. uhm??? seriously? I was floored. I couldnt do it..I do NOT have an extra $150 right now, especially after just shelling out $200...that basically was for nothing, since it didnt work. So the tech handed me back the cat and said...ok, well...try to keep it clean and hope it heals. omg...I am soooo upset.

The cat is 9 yrs old...14 lbs, neutered male, I have had him since he was born...I owned his mother. It is killing me seeing this gaping bloody wound on his neck, I know it has to hurt, and he is sooo protective of it,....he makes it nearly impossible to get near it to "keep it clean" they told me to just flush it with cool water, nothing else. Is there anything I can do at all????  Help!!!
