So WIndows 8 came out this weekend and I went out and bought the DVD. It was only $70, so not a bad deal for a full blown Windows OS.
I had Windows 7 at home already so I chose the upgrade path instead of a fresh install. Apparently if you have WIndows 7 you can choose the upgrade and it will copy all your previous programs and settings. If you have Vista or XP, it will supposedly upgrade you but will not save your programs or settings. Anyway it went off without a hitch for me. I had read that it may find incompatible programs when upgrading and warn you, and simply not bring those programs over, but in my case I guess everything copied. I have not tried all my programs yet but the ones I did seem to work.
There is the desktop version and the mobile version for lack of a better term. The desktop version works with the mouse and keyboard. It's a little weird at first to use. Your main Start page has all those tiles, like Windows Phone has. There are some different mouse tricks to bring up the settings, etc. You can also drop back into your traditional desktop look but without the Start button. That button is gone. You still have the desktop icons and the task bar. The main Start page, you can add tiles to it for any program that you want, so you have wasy access to it. I watched a youtube video about how to navigate and it helped me find the things you are used to getting through the start button. Your traditional desktop programs you can buy or download, and install just like before but there is a windows app store where you could download apps which will only work on Windows 8. I have not gone there yet.
I can definitely see that it is a good way of navigating things on a touch screen device like a Phone, tablet, or tough screen computer/laptop. On a mouse/keyboard only traditional desktop, i don't know that the new interface really gains you that much. It seems faster and it is supposedly even more stable than 7, so I guess those are nice pluses. It had a very much improved Task Manager which I find very helpful and detailed. It has the new Internet Explorer which seems very fast to me. I can report more as I play around with it more.
