Or I should really say the weekend--I actually went swing dancing to 2 diff. places, once on Fri & again on Sat w/ the same 2 girls. I take ballroom, Latin & swing lessons, but the only times I have been out to a dance that was not sponsored by my school, it has been to ballroom. A couple of weeks ago I went to a ballroom dance that I have never been to before & it was kind of disappointing. It happened that 2 guys I knew were there so I did dance w/ them and they always do "mixers" where you get in a line of men & a line of women and dance w/ the next person coming up. Aside from that only 1 guy asked me to dance--but he happened to be cute. It was very frustrating because I am actually a good dancer, but how do you let people know that if they won't ask you? But my friend who goes there a lot said it was much more crowded than usual so I don't know if that had anything to do with it--too much female competition maybe? I also didn't find the people to be very friendly. It was so crowded that my friend & I had to scramble to find 2 empty seats at a table and none of the people sitting near us even said hi. At one of our school dances if new people come, everyone is friendly and the teacher/organizer will make an effort to say hi, introduce them to people, etc.
So I found the atmosphere at swing was much more casual and friendly. The 1st place we went to on Fri, there were people there from college kids on up to people over 60 and everybody is really just there to dance. Guys who were in their 20's would ask me to dance. I didn't see any men there who were potential dating prospects though. But Sat night I noticed 3 or 4 of the same guys at this place even though Fri was near Boston & Sat was in RI--I guess there are dances at diff. places every weekend and people who are really into it travel around to all of them. So I counted it up later and at least 7 diff. guys asked me to dance and some of them more than once. Now considering I'm not the "beautifull girl" type that guys will fall all over to talk to, I felt that was doing pretty well. My friends got asked to dance a lot too. I really hate it when I go somewhere to dance and spend a lot of time sitting around. I did start talking to one guy and told him that I was originally from RI so we talked about where we went to high school & he mentioned that he used to go to track meets at my high school and then said "but of course I'm older than you"--but when he said when he graduated we were actually one year apart. So being that RI is such a small state, of course we knew someone in common. And I was impressed that he remembered my name cause he & his friend were standing by the door when we were leaving and said goodnight Liz (and he knew my friend's name too so I wouldn't get too much of a big head about that) but he was definitely cute--and there were a couple of other cute guys there too. So this might have to be a new hangout for weekends.
