There are rumors swirling around my son's high school about an incident that was being planned for this Friday during an assembly. With all the fears about school shootings, it's definitely got the students scared, and the rumor mill has it so that parents that don't even have kids at the high school are scared of sending their kids to their respective middle and elementary schools that day. They are having extra police presense, there is already a city cop there every day as it is. I also heard that they'll be having metal detectors and a lockdown during the school day to to make sure the kids feel safe.
Some parents are keeping their kids home that day. I talked with my dh and we are still sending my son. We both believe that you can't wrap your kids in a bubble as much as you would like to. I'm glad that our district is taking the threats seriously, but it's frustrating that kids will even make these allegations as a prank. If anything, they are probably safer on that day then they would be on a normal school day :(
How do you handle these types of situations? This is a first for us.
