I know we have a few ladies who's due dates are creeping up and a lot of us who still have a while, but how are you getting ready for your upcoming labor? No matter how early or how far you are along, there are things that you can do to prepare yourself for your upcoming labor. Did you take the classes at a local hospital or birthing center? My husband and I took a labor class along with a comfort skills class which included all the massage techniques and breathing practice for labor. There are also other classes, but I chose not to attend all of them. My hospital offers a medicated birth option class which I decided that since I'm a nurse I probably know enough to not attend that one. They also offer a class on the unexpected things that can happen such as a c-section, and a class that is a labor dress rehearsal so to speak. I've been trying to read through the sections about labor in my pregnancy books and learn as much as I can about how labor progresses and some of the things that can happen so that I'm as prepared as I can be.
What are you concerned with when you are thinking about your upcoming labor? I think my biggest worry as a new mom is just that it's so new and I have no clue what to expect or how I will react to the discomforts that labors bring. All labors are different as well, so if I have a difficult labor this time it's still hard to say what kind of a labor I'll have the next time. I also think a lot of us worry about having to be induced or have an unexpected c-section, it's just hard to predict what might happen.
Are you bringing anything special with you to help during labor? I had used a program from Circle and Bloom to help with relaxation for trying to conceive and they offer a relaxation program for labor as well. I'm hoping it will help me get in the zone and be as relaxed as possible. The hospital also suggested some items to use in massage at the class we attended. We practiced massage with a pool noodle (the ones with the hole in the middle, you cut them to a shorter length). They had you roll them back and forth across your back for massage. They also recommended tennis balls for rolling around on your back during labor for cheap massage tools. They're easy to pack in your bag and you could throw them away after you're done with them. I'm also for sure bringing my ipod to help with some relaxing music during labor!!
