The flu season has brought about the debate on who should qualify for paid sick leave. I'm probably not the only mom here who has debated on whether her child (or herself) was too sick to go to daycare or school, and for some people it can really hurt their paycheck if they lose hours due to illness.
A school speech therapist who works as an independent contractor, she doesn't have paid sick days. So the mother of two reported to work and hoped for the best - and was aching, shivering and coughing by the end of the day. She stayed home the next day, then loaded up on medicine and returned to work.
"It's a balancing act" between physical health and financial well-being, she said.

The opposite side of the debate is that employers just can't take on any more cost, but they also don't want a sick employee to show up for work and infect their co-workers or the general public.
