My DH is a truck driver for a comany out of Minnesota and he pulls over sized equipment. Well, this past week he notified the company he was going to be leaving at the end of Feb. His reason is because the division he works in is a new division in a long standing company and as a result he isn't making the money he should be with the equipment he has. He told them he could be home with both of us working and make the same as what he makes alone on the road for a month at a time. So, the bosses had a discussion and said they would wrk something out with him. He told them if they would be willing to help him make more money that he'd be willing to move us to a place where he runs through a lot more often then where we are now. That way he would be by the house and we could see him more often. After he told them that the company owner offered him a guaranteed office position within the next 3-6 months if he would move us to where the company is located.
Now, here's the problem with that. The company is in central Minnesota and we are in southern Indiana right now. We have begun looking at the cost of living there and it is literally double what we pay right now for rent for the same sized place. Everywhere we have looked that would be reasonably close to the office is at least $1200 a month. That's a whole lot more money than what we are used to paying. I don't know yet what his pay will be but I am just really nervous that it's still going to be too low. I have no issue about working too once we get there but it's just getting there.
Are any of you residents of Minnesota and if so, how do you balance out the cost of living there? Are the wages higher to acommodate the cost of housing there? Just curious to see what others might say to maybe help ease my nerves. We are both really excited about the opportunity as this will be a position he has been working for for nearly 10 years...and it will get him OFF THE ROAD!! :) I am just wondering how those who live there are able to afford it. Any advie?
