Haircuts at home?

I've been thinking about trying my hand at cutting DS's hair myself.  He likes to keep his hair pretty short, so that means a haircut every 3 or 4 weeks.  After a while, that can add up so I'm thinking about buying a set of clippers, thinning shears, and good scissors to just cut it myself.  Has anyone here ever cut their kids' hair?  If so, do you have any tips?
