There has been some controversy about whether or not supplements help prevent fractures. The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends against supplements for most women. http://annals.org/article.aspx?articleid=1655858#Abstract

My primary care doctor recommends supplements for both. I get 400 IU of Vitamin D in my multivitamin and don't supplement beyond that. I take 600 IU of calcium on the days that I don't feel my diet has given me enough.
