I have not been on the board for months due to the time my new company has taken to get rolling, but I missed you guys and since I was just sitting around reflecting today, I thought I would pop in to say HI.
Jen - sounds like some good plans for you, including a trip!
Tracey - Girls running you ragged as usual, but you are a trooper!
Becky - A new job??? I know the other one was really stressful, I would love to hear more.
Norma - Only 56 more days???? You are such a good roll model.
Well as you all know I went on my own after a corporate buy-out in 2012. I started with another guy as a contractor, hoping to move to a partnership with him. It was not looking that way and his personality was not meshing with mine, so after a bit of 4th of July fireworks, I left. I was working with a consultant at the time and she helped me realize I could go on my own and succeed. Well I worked from home for a time and opened my own office in October. Since then I have held about 4 educational events and have seen over 20 new folks, many became clients.
I am proud of what I am doing and how I am helping and educating people. I placed a lot of business in 2013 that has not hit my accounts yet, so 2014 should start off pretty well.
My daughter is finishing her undergrad degree this year, with a double major, and a 3.7 GPA. She is applying to law schools, and one of her professors asked if she would consider a Masters in Economics toward a PhD. She has the same BF studying engineering and doing well. He has 2 years to go, but has had good paid internships every summer.
My SS got admitted to his program in the busines school at his college and has 1.5 years to go. He is seriously interviewing for internships for next summer.
Hubby is doing well at his job, and really working on his management style, reading a lot and trying new techniques to manage people in several countries - even encouraging them to share things about their culture with one anoher!
Financially we are about $15k better off on our balance sheet than last year - not much at all! I had to use business credit and took some money from my IRA to get my firm going. But it is going and I now have residual income, hired an assisant and have a nice office to grow in. My marketing plan is agressive and I work about 60 hours a week - but I LOVE IT!!
As far as spending, we cut back a lot. We cook from basics, and spend about half of what we normally have done for the holidays, which was a big accomplishment from me. We were calculating the cost of our kids the other day and figure we will be $30k ahead a year once they graduate due to the cost of tuition, room, board, car insurance, cell phones, etc. Daughter works for a lot of her own expenses and we limited what we spend for SS, but he is cracking down in school, so I hope that pays off because he seems to be going after a good degree that should get him a job if the economy keeps improving.
So sorry this was long, but I missed you all and wanted to wish all of you a Happy 2014!!!
