Peni had mentioned a while back about wanting to do a discussion on this topic. I read more about it today and found it facinating!

"Mystery religions were widely practised in the Greek and Roman areas up to the 4th century AD. By their very nature they were secretive, and our knowledge of all the practices (which anyway varied by cult and over time and space) is patchy and has to be surmised from a range of different sources."
