How can I help my DS, now 8, learn to put his face in the water. He's been in the pool 3x/week for 6 months and he still will not jump into the pool or put his face into the water. I watch him & see he has the ability to swim, IF, he were to put his face into the water. Instead he can get 2 strides, pulls his face up & he's done.
My DD (5yrs) is also a slow swim learner & was more fearful of water than he was ... but she is now dunking in, going down water slides, jumping in & can swim a foot or two. This is upsetting my DS.
We tried the OT thing, only one our insurance covered in our area & she was not worth the money. Seriously, we were there for 3 mos and she never even got his goals together. For 2 months she said it was already she just needed to compile into a report. She never sent her info to our gen. doc like she promised & often cut our time in 1/2 (if she showed at all) and charged me for a full hour.
I cannot afford OT w/o insurance & his school says he doesn't qualify for the school OT.
He's really progressed in other areas of SPD, except for water on his face & food (which I doubt we'll ever over come).
Any ideas on how to get him to accept water on his face? I'm tired of watching him become so sad b/c child after child enters the swim classes & moves on. I'm also tired of teaching him how to quit, as he's already quit so many other things due to other kids surpassing him. So I decided it's time to stop quitting with swim as this has more to do with safety than any of the other sports he's tried.
