Short version: Ethan John was born April 5 at 7:01 am, 8 lb, 11 oz, 21 inches via vaginal delivery, scheduled induction using pitocin. Had epidural and episiotomy. He looks just like big brother and is absolutely perfect and healthy! He loves snuggling, and we love snuggling him right back! I am so happy and proud to be a mama again.
Long version: I was scheduled to be induced Easter Sunday night at 8 pm, because my due date was Wed. and my OB would be out of town that Tues.-Sat. I really wanted him to deliver Ethan, because he had missed my DS’s delivery. Plus I had already had a vaginal delivery, and was walking around at 2 cm and cervix very soft, so an induction was likely to go smoothly. We had a nice Easter Sunday dinner with the family, left DS with my parents and headed to the hospital. The pitocin was started at a 2 (mg, ml, or however they measure it) at about 9 pm. By 12 am the pitocin was upped to 14, by 1:30 to an 18. My OB had ordered 20 to be the max, before breaking the water and other interventions. By 2:00 I was ready for the epidural, with contractions obviously getting painful. I told the nurse I wanted to go pee while she was calling the anesthesiologist, so I did. I stood up from peeing, and my water started leaking slowly. I got back to the bed, and sat on the edge with DH in front of me, to administer the epi. The anesthesiologist was ready, and asked me to arch my back toward her so she could stick it in. As soon as I did that, my water broke big-time, and found out later that it splashed all over DH’s shoes, LOL. My water continued to gush everywhere as she finished the epi. As I lay back down to let the meds kick in, my water kept gushing, and I had a bad case of the shakes from the meds for maybe 10 min. It was a terrific epi… I was good to go. ☺ The epi was at 2:30, and by 4 am, I was STILL 2 cm! I couldn’t believe that after all that time and pitocin that there was no further dilation, although the head was lower and my water had broken. At that point I was at a 20 for the pitocin, the max. That must have been what I needed, because it went really fast from there. By 5:00 I was 5 cm, then at 6:20 was 9 ½ cm! My OB was en route. I was ready to push at 6:35, which is when my OB arrived. I told DH I predicted baby would be out at 7 am. After 25 minutes of pushing and an episiotomy (cut on the same scar as last time) Ethan came out at 7:01! I thought when I first saw him that he looked to be a 6 or 7 pounder. I was surprised and happy to hear that he was 8lb11oz! That’s only 3 oz lighter than my DS. DH went over to take pics at about 1 minute old, and I listened to his wonderful cries. DH came back over, and my OB went to deliver the placenta. I guess the cord broke as he pulled on it… TMI… so he had to push with one hand on my stomach, with the other hand waaaay up in there. It felt like he was pulling my guts out, OMG it was awful, but I knew it had to be done, and as soon as this and the stitching were over, I’d have my little guy in my arms. Finally, the placenta popped out in one piece, whew! Doc said, “Big baby, big placenta!” Then he stitched me up and I got to hold DS. It went so well, and he is healthy and perfect. He nursed shortly after that. My parents and DS came to visit a few hours later, and Alex was obsessed with Ethan’s toes and kept trying to give him his paci. We left the hospital Wed. morning and it sure does feel nice to be home! We did have some issues by the second night at the hospital, where Ethan was frantically rooting at the breast even after nursing. I called the nurse and was in tears because Ethan was crying, I couldn’t give him what he wanted, the colostrum wasn’t cutting it. The same thing happened with Alex, and I thought that if I just tried harder this time, we wouldn’t have to supplement. She reassured me that it was OK, I was doing everything I was supposed to. So he got a bottle. Come to find out that upon discharge, he was 8 lb 0 oz, which was on the borderline of losing too much weight (10% I think) We were supplementing, every other feeding, once we got home. On Thursday, he went to the pedi and found he was 8 lb 4 oz. His pedi and I agreed that I would continue to nurse and see when the milk came in, and go from there. We go back Monday to see if he is at birth weight or more. Sure enough my milk came in this morning (Friday). So I’ll keep you posted on how breastfeeding goes.
I know that was long, but aren’t all birth stories? ☺ Thanks for reading!
I'm just putting a link here to his pics on my FB account...
