Hello. My name is Marybeth and I am new to this board. I have a 5 yr old daughter and a 2 yr old son. We are thinking that our daughter has ADHD, but nothing has been professionally diagnosed. She seems to be mainly inattentive type, she is not hyperactive. My hubby and his father have ADD, so that also adds to the possibility.
My husband was laid off so my kids dont have insurance right now, but once they get back on it we are going to talk to the dr about getting her tested(we are working on getting state funded insurance, but they probably wont cover any sort of testing). Until then, I was wondering if any of the following things sounds like traits of someone with ADHD, or are they just 'normal' 5 yr old traits?
- Her attention is horrible. We can ask her to put a book away on the shelf 10 ft away, and something will distract on the way. And then if you ask her what she was supposed to be doing she cant remember. It was horrible just getting her ready for preschool, she would have to get up an hour and a half before it was time to leave.
- She is very bright and has great verbal skills, but she acts kinda like the class clown when she is around other kids. In her class she spoke better than most of the other kids, but she just seems very immature(if that makes any sense, considering she is only 5). She often speaks in a goofy voice and makes funny sounds around friends, maybe for the attention??
- She is like a zombie when she watched TV. We dont let her watch much, but when she does it is very difficult to get her attention and she cannot recall anything you told her when the TV was on. It doesn't even have to be something she likes, the weather channel or news can be on and she is mesmerized.
- She gets night terrors, which I read can be related to ADHD. They come and go in spurts. She will not have any for a month or two, then get 5-6 in a week. Usually she sits up and cries, sometimes to the point of gagging herself, and she cannot be consoled. besides the night terrors, she gets up almost nightly, either she cries or comes to our room, usually because of a bad dream.
Sorry that turned in to such ramble, and thank you for reading.
