I'm feeling even more confused at my son's ability do do well in public school next year. We weren't really caring much about him being in any gifted class. But I was looking online and there is a "gifted" class of 24 kids, 8 from grade 3, 8 from grade 4, and 8 from grade 5, no more, no less, even if there are more or less gifted kids. It also said there is only ONE grade 3 class and one split, so about 36 kids DS9's age. That means 8/36 kids in his grade go to the gifted class? What really? Since only 2 percent of the population is gifted, and this is WAY higher, I was confused, so I called and had a nice conversation with the teacher of this class. She was very easy to talk to. She agreed that although she has 3 of her own kids who have very high IQs, her gifted class doesn't expect them to be gifted, and some don't even perform past grade level.
He had ZERO kids at his level in the public school I pulled him out of. He is older now, so we were assuming there would be.
Here's my problem: If all the top kids are not in the regular class, where does that leave my DS9??? It's too late to apply for the "gifted" class. So not only is my son going from 4th grade work this year to 4th again (due to being with same aged kids), there will more than likely be NO kids like him in his class. And they keep the same kids from 3rd to 4th to 5th, so not much change of him going later. AND I ASKED HER IF THERE WERE KIDS WITH ASPERGERS IN HER CLASS AND SHE SAID YES. I had to use caps there. I have never met any aspies...
This just makes me sad.
