My pediatrician just suggested probiotics for my two and a half year old little boy. I have never been one to use herbal remedies or supplements, but I have decided to try probiotics. My son has had really nasty,loose stools for about two months now. He had an ear infection in August, went on Omnicef (antibiotic that always gives him horrible diarrhea and once even a fungal infection on his bottom) and his stools have been abnormal since. I'm wondering if there is a link between this and his autism-like behavior, as I have been reading a lot about Leaky Gut syndrome. I should also note that his dramatic speech regression and rather sudden onset of autism symptoms started around that same time.

I've considered contacting a pediatric gastroenterologist, but thought I'd give the probiotics a try and follow up with my pediatrician first. Has anyone ever used probiotics? Did they help with behavior and/or loose stools? I'd also like to know if anyone out there has seen a specialist for similar issues. Is Leaky Gut taken seriously by the medical community? I mentioned my concerns to my son's neurologist and he didn't seem too interested.
