Gum Contouring

The gum contouring process is an effective way to solve this problem. Gum contouring is usually done with a scalpel. Laser devices are also an emerging treatment option for gum contouring. The laser devices or the scalpel is used to trim the excessive gum overlying the teeth and reshape the appearance of the teeth. This is a process with little pain and is effective to remove the excessive gum. The scalpel method takes slightly longer than the laser devices. The laser devices stop bleeding faster than does the scalpel method.

The specialist dentist will first numb the patient and possibly give something to relax you. When you’re ready for the surgery, the specialist will plan how to reshape the gums before beginning. Once they’ve planned it, they’ll cut the gum as it should be, then get the bleeding under control. If a laser is used, it can cauterize the bleeding.

Trimming the Bone

After cutting the front of the gum, if it’s still not enough to solve the problem of the gummy smile, then the patient and specialist can discuss another surgery involving trimming the bone that makes the gum look so prominent. Before cutting the bone, the dental practitioner will decide how to shape it and point out the part of the bone that is suitable for risk-free reshaping. This is a quick process with very little risk. After the surgery is finished, you must follow all your specialist’s instructions. Your smile should then be just as you’d like it.
