Query letter assignment

Here is my attempt.

Dear Agent:

The secret of Whitetail Creek lay coiled beneath it's pious surface like a rattler waiting to strike. And strike it did. A murdered witch in their tiny religious community. Panic consumed the inhabitants. Police detective Cade Jennings knew a deeper secret, that the very heart of the city beat with spells and incantations.

Chat Tonight - Female Mystery Writers and Sleuths

Tonight I am guest hosting for CL-Shanna on the Female Mystery Writers and Sleuths chat at 8 P.M. EST in the Special Events room.

This month we are discussing "Contents Under Pressure" by Edna Buchanan. If you write mysteries, stop by even if you haven't read the book. After about 15 minutes to half an hour the chat includes all sorts of mystery reading and writing dialogue.

Gotta go pick up my old puppy from the pet resort now. See you at 8!

Attention writers, agents/publishers and readers....

Please check out www.rosedog.com. It's a site for writers to showcase their work to be viewed by agents and publishers as well as people who just want to read new stuff! It designs a bio for you as well! I have just discovered this site in STORY magazine. It might be something that could benefit all of us. You'll be amazed at how this site has designed their software to accomodate agents and publishers. It's very cool and it's free! Check it out!

Can anyone be a writer?

I have entertained the thought of writing for a while. I even took a few writing classes, bought and skimmed through a few writing books, but I do not have much confidence in my abilities. How do I get the confidence I need to start? I feel my grammer in incorrect, and if it is, then how could I possibly become a writer? I have a passion for fiction books. I love Dean Koontz, John Saul, John Sanford, Peter Straub, but for me to be able to write like them seems like only a pipe dream. Am I hopeless?

frustrated writer

Hi, I have all these ideas for stories, got some written. But I just am not able to get them in the right order. Now that I am on a fine writing board I am hoping for help in a big way. I have made a goal to finish these stories and get them out to be published. Thanks for this writing class. Mary

My query -- this one worked very, very well for me

I used this query, which is one-and-a-half pages, to pitch my first book. Out of the 12 angencies I sent it to, I only got 2 rejections and the other 10 requested the manuscript. Eventually, I did get signed with one of the agencies. I had read a book about showing, not telling in a query and that's what I tried for here. (The quotes from the book were italicized in the actual query but the board doesn't let you do that).:
