Hi Jessica and Staff
I'm not yet a writer. I have, however, entertained the idea for the last few years. I would like to write a book.
Because I'm still at work for at least 2 1/2 hours from the time your class starts, pacific time, I cannot attend so I'd like to ask this question, How do I start the story? I've tried several times but it always seems too corny or something!
Thank you for you help.
Travel writing for a non-writer
I am not a writer, but love to travel and experience new cultures. I have been told that I can write about my travels and possibly sell my material.
Can anyone recommend some books or tips that are good for a non-writer to read or use? I honestly do not want to make a business out of travel writing. I am interested in it mainly because I want to encourage others to explore outside their comfort zone and experience all that the world has to offer.

Tricky Boards
This is the first time in days that I was able to get into the boards, let alone post. I'd just like to remind everyone that there are some problems with the boards and that iVillage is doing their best to fix them. If you are having problems just email one of the CL's or Jessica, or the Community Moderator, Diane Wood at dianetw@mail.ivillage.com We want everyone to have a good time here at the Village so please let us know when you are having problems.

I cannot remember who asked for a book of quotations, but here is the info.
The Fifth Edition of the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations has just been published. It has more than 20,000 quotations and 1136 pages. Some examples: "Some books are undeservedly forgotten; none are undeservedly remembered." W. H. Auden or "I had an interest in death from an early age. It fascinated me. When I heard 'Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,' I thought, 'Did he fall, or was he pushed?." P.D. James or "When angry, count four; when very angry, swear." Mark Twain
An example of a fiction hook:
Here is an example of a hook--the lead paragraph that describes a novel: "Something's not right at Kirkston Abbey, a prestigious boys' boarding school, Bullies torment the weak. Teachers terrify the students. At night, cruel tricks are plotted in whispers, with deadly results." from Book of the Month Club
Jessica-can't remember my question from class, but...
A "mini" writing exercise: Write a query letter and post to the board
A quote to ponder:
"There is no short-cut to art, one has to work hard, be open and flexible in your mind, keep the child alive inside you, and through a whole lifetime be ready to learn new things and---of course be mentally prepared for a hard punch on the nose--especially when you think you're doing well."
