I have this need......... (11/15)

A Good Day

A Good Day

I shake my head and feel down the dark hallway of this abandoned building, stopping to shove my blanket in the hole behind the fire extinguisher sign. I stroll out upon the sidewalk and glance up and down the street, trying to decide which way I want to go. I think, I will cross the street and check out the Baker's new shop on 5th Avenue. I pull my cap down to cover my blue eyes, and hold put my hands in my pockets. I round the corner and stride down 5th Avenue, all the people in such haste, race past me.

I was looking through the archived boards and...

came across a few interesting questions that were posed to the class way back at the beginning and since there are so many new people here, i thought maybe they could be asked again...

what kind of books do you read? how do you write? who are your favorite authors? what are your favorite books? who are your favorite characters? what are some of your favorite beginnings (first lines)?

To Tobyelaine regarding your November exercise.

My Introduction

Reminder: On 11/17 we're going to talk about the November Writing Exercise. You still have time to post your exercise

and read other member's entries. Join us for a discussion about why writing for the senses is effective.

Writing Query Letters: Words are all we have

On Wednesday, November 10 our class focused on query letters and book proposals. A query letter is equivalent to a salesperson's cold call. It should never sound like a form letter, but instead be creative and provocative. Here are some pointers and other ideas that might be helpful.

Words of encouragement:

"When writing my first novels I would often become discoraged, stare at my typewriter and worry that nothing I was writing was good enough. This would bring me to a full stop.

NOV. EX: Making Carbonara (reposted from end of last board)

MAKING CARBONARA

A log snapped in the fireplace and I jumped, startled. It was still in the eighties in Southern California, and I wasn't yet adapted to the sweater-weather of late October in Denver. Chloe peeked at me from the kitchen doorway, suppressing a giggle.
