Making The Day A Bit Brighter

I could hear the scr-scrat-scratch of the chair as it slid against the concrete floor. It was one of those hard, gray folding chairs that felt cold when you first sat down and then gradually became warmer the longer you sat on it.

Traditions Nov. exercise

Here's my attempt at this month's exercise. Gloria

Traditions

Traditions are those tender moments you cling to when life moves on in seven different directions. They make life’s inevitable changes bearable. I’ll forever carry with me one childhood tradition, Thanksgivings at Grandpa’s farm.

This is a great vehicle for writers.

Hello all. I've been a writer for over 20 years. Considering I'm only 33, I think that is a great accomplishment, but the thing is, I'm not consistent with my writing. I have to keep dusting off my old work and polishing my skills after years of neglect. HELP!!!!!!!! I am looking for encouragement and advice to keep me going. I have loads of ideas for my writing, but I need it get it to fruition. Thanks for letting me vent.

November Exercise: An American Thanksgiving

"Let's all gather around the table for prayer before dinner," our hostess, LaDonna, said. "Eric, would you give the blessing, please?"

I glanced up at my husband, surprised. I hadn't known his family was religious. Then again, I hadn't known much about his family before arriving earlier today. This was my first all in-law event, Thanksgiving.

Enjoyed this Jennifer!

I found the writing lively and descriptive. I am curious about your familiarity with this festival. It sounds somewhat similar to the Mexican Day of the Dead ... and I know some southeast Asian cultures reverence their departed ancestors in similar ways. You write with authority about the event. Does it have any significance in your life?

I found this piece much more interesting than the writing on Thanksgiving... and I think that is because Thanksgiving is so very familiar to me... this one was different.

Nice job.

November Writing Exercise: Mid-Winter Festival

Mid-Winter Festival

I was twelve and in the mood to prove that nothing beyond my knowledge existed.

“You don’t really think the ghosts eat it, do you?” I demanded of my best friend, Jimmy, as we carefully filled our backpacks with the packaged food.

“’Course not” he assured me. “I bet the rats or squirrels or something gets it all.”

“Even the cups?” I shook my head, disagreeing. “The priests come back later when we’re sleeping and clean it all up.”
