Jessica, Talking About The New Ways Of Writing
I read your post about run on sentences and thought that your example proved a good point. I guess you could say that I'm from the old school of writing: never start a sentence with "and" or "but", never end a sentence with a preposition, avoid run on sentences. My list goes on and on.
Oct. writing exercise:mine is real and personal
This is the beginning of a true story. One I hope to expand into a novel. It is very hard to write and I'm scared to death. Please be kind with your criticism to this first time poster. Thanks :o)
October assignment, new writer...
Hi, I hope you don't mind if I join this group from here, I cant come to a session on line as I live in Australia, and I am not available at that time, though I would love too..
To Sandycg ... are you still here?
You appeared like an angel, out of nowhere, to give me exactly the advice I needed. You answered a question for me (on Archived board #7) then disappeared again.
I guess the board archived very soon after your post because I missed it way back then. It was only today as I was trolling the archives, procrastinating getting to work on my novel, that I saw it.
YES! You're absolutely right! Your words punched my soul with their truth! That's IT! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!
Bio, October Excercise: The Beginning Of The End
Hi everyone, I'm new to this (posting) so please make allowances. My name is Pat, and I'm SO glad to find an on-line writing class! Have been writing off and on since I could read, and am finally getting serious about it. I'll take all the constructive criticism I can get. Figure I need all the help I can get. Hope to make a career of this eventually. Used to be a nurse, but illness forced a change of plans. Looking forward to participating with all you wonderful people! Enough about me, here's the exercise.
Seeking Succulence in the Silicon Valley
THis is the first time I've done this, sent part of myself into Cyberspace, and I have to admit that it's a little unnerving, and that I hesitated for several moments before I clicked on the "post" icon. My mind is somehow equating it to performing some kind of modest striptease before thousands of strangers seated at their computer screens. Bear with me.
Hello from JanetDenise
I just want to briefly introduce myself. My name is Janet and I am a 35 years young educator. I spent 8 years as an English teacher on the junior high level and I am now a school counselor. I live in Mesa, Arizona.
Since I was a kid I have enjoyed writing stories. I did it a lot then to express my self through my shyness and introversion and to please teachers when I had writing assignements.
To Be Seen And Heard
There was once a young woman who believed that she was all alone in a world full of people. At school, in class, she raised her hand but was never seen. She spoke but was never heard. When people looked at her, they seemed puzzled at what they saw. When people heard her, they never seemed to understand what was said. She really didn't remember when it happened. It seems that as she moved from her childhood, which was uneventful, and into her teens, she slowly, gradually began to disappear.
Run on Sentences
Just a quick question. My sister and I had an argument over whether or not the term and problem "run on sentence" still exists. She says there is no such thing with the new writing being taught today.
Question???
I want to do some research on the language in London in the late 1800's. Key words, phrases, typical speech patterns, does anyone know the best way to go about this? Books?? Movies?? I am just not sure where to go. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
