Fran Drescher has revealed a secret she has been keeping for a very long time -- the man she was married to for more than 21 years is gay. In a new interview with In Touch Weekly, the actress says that Peter Marc Jacobson, whom she divorced in 1999, came clean to her about his sexuality after their marriage was over and says her ex's confession actually brought them closer together.
"Peter and I feel so blessed to have met each other and to still have a caring, loving relationship," Drescher says. "Love is what we're all about."
The couple met in high school and married in 1978 when Drescher was just 21. "Peter and I met when we were 15," Drescher tells the magazine. "We were just kids and didn't know who we truly were. We went through a lot together." Jacobson later went on to create and direct Drescher's breakout sitcom The Nanny.
It wasn't until after the couple split in 1996 and divorced in 1999 that Jacobson told Drescher he was gay. But the exes are still "the best of friends," she insists. "We love each other dearly. We have even fixed each other up! I more successfully than him, by the way."
Showing their solidarity, Drescher and Jacobson recently cohosted a cocktail party in Los Angeles to benefit an organization that sought to block California's ban on same-sex marriage. "I'm a gay icon," she explains. "But even if I weren't, I'm a political activist who believes in preserving the American dream, which is tolerance of diversity and the separation of church and state."
