Frequent Colds

Chronic stress -- whether it’s from being bullied on the bus, feeling overwhelmed at school or living in a chaotic home -- can compromise children’s immune function, making them more susceptible to colds and other infections they’re exposed to. To help your child combat stress on a basic level, make sure he or she has plenty of exercise, healthy meals, good quality sleep and enough time for free, unstructured play. And, of course, give your children a refresher course in proper handwashing (lathering up for 20 seconds before rinsing and drying with paper towels), since “ultimately it’s germs that are going to make your child sick,” says Tanya Remer Altmann, M.D., a pediatrician in Westlake Village, California, and author of Mommy Calls.

At school, encourage your child to get in the habit of taking a pump of alcohol-based hand sanitizer every time he enters and leaves the classroom.
