Fun: Safe Sidewalk Paint

My favorite projects in the whole world are those that send kids outdoors, armed with color and imagination and energy. Participate in the mural making if you want. Or simply watch the pure pleasure of a child releasing art onto the world. This sidewalk paint is nontoxic as well as biodegradable.

What You Will Need:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup powdered nonfat milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon icing food coloring (available at most grocers)
  • paintbrushes in a variety of sizes
  • sponges

The icing food coloring is a paste instead of a liquid and will give you glorious colors of paint. However, you can also use regular food coloring in a pinch.

Pour the water in a jar. Add the milk and the food coloring and stir thoroughly until the paste is incorporated into the milk. You should have a vivid paint. Make up several colors. Supply your child with paintbrushes and sponges, and ask for a mural to decorate your driveway or sidewalk. At the end of the art project, the painting can be hosed off. Some residue of food coloring may remain, but it disappears with time and weather.
