Future Friendly: 10 Easy Strategies for Going Green
Think you're a good environmental steward? See how you stack up to our 10-step action plan for reducing energy, water, and waste!
1. Bump Up Your Heating and Cooling IQ
Think before you touch that thermostat. Heating and cooling account for nearly half of the average home's energy consumption. Reduce your carbon footprint (and save money) by making your home more energy efficient. Cut heating and cooling costs up to 20 percent by sealing air leaks and insulating attic and basement crawl spaces (seek out a home energy auditor to identify problem areas). Instead of air conditioning your entire home, try to cool specific rooms (such as bedrooms) and use fans-which use less energy-to encourage natural airflow. To save even more, clean and replace furnace and air conditioner filters regularly, and install a programmable thermostat, which adjusts temperatures up or down at night or while you're away.
