The sexy Latin Night performances on Dancing with the Stars left two couples battling it out to remain on the dance competition. Unlike previous weeks, when the couple with the lowest number of votes was automatically booted out of the ballroom, this week it was the judges' choice.
Host Tom Bergeron explained that the two teams with the lowest combination of scores and votes would have to participate in a "Dance Duel," and then judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli would immediately decide who would go and who was safe.
Unsurprisingly given his consistently low-scoring dances, rocker Gavin DeGraw and partner Karina Smirnoff, who earned only 19 points from the judges on Monday night, landed in the bottom two. The other couple joining them in the Dance Duel was more of a shock: Jaleel White and pro Kym Johnson, who earned a respectable 24 for their samba.
Before they began their simultaneous cha-cha, DeGraw revealed he wasn't surprised he was having to dance for his life. He even admitted he wasn't expecting to win and said White "is much more talented."
As the "I Don't Want to Be" singer predicted, the judges ultimately told him and Smirnoff that their time on the ballroom was done. Smirnoff, who won last season's competition with partner J.R. Martinez, would not be defending her place as mirror ball champion!
"It's been amazing, just being a part of the show," DeGraw told Bergeron before he and Smirnoff danced one last time together. "It's been awesome."
The remaining contestants are: Donald Driver, Roshon Fegan, Melissa Gilbert, Katherine Jenkins, Gladys Knight, William Levy, Maria Menounos and Jaleel White.
