Get the Look -Natalie Portman-Hair

Natalie Portman has the kind of talent and beauty that would have rocketed her to fame even without her starring roles in the Star Wars films. The 24-year-old beauty was discovered at a pizza parlor by a model scout when she was 11. From there, her career has reached galaxy heights. The Harvard graduate received a Golden Globe for her role in Closer, and an Oscar nomination as well. Plus she's appearing in no less than six films scheduled for release over the next two years.

We adore her for her intelligent career choices and her unassuming elegance. And we love this hairstyle, because it looks like her. Bean Schappert, co-owner of the trendy Beehive Salon in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, says that like most great hairstyles, the key to this loose "tousled glam" look is the cut. Begin with long layers and long, sweeping bangs.

Step 1 For Natalie's voluminous look, you'll want to go light on the conditioner. Wash your hair with a shampoo that will leave it squeaky clean, and use only a very light conditioner. This is important, because a moisturizing shampoo weighs hair down. To keep hair shiny, gently towel-dry it, squeezing out excess moisture in a smooth, careful way so as not to rough up the hair's cuticle. Then comb damp hair using a wide-tooth comb. Don't use a small-tooth comb or a brush on wet or damp hair, which, again, will disturb the cuticle, causing the hair to look rather fuzzy.

Step 2 Apply a styling gel '- start with a nickel-sized dollop and rub it into hands evenly, then apply to hair from the nape to the ends. Bean says most people begin applying products from the top of the head moving downward, which is a mistake, because too much of the product ends up on top, where you need it least. Instead, he advises, begin at the nape of your neck, dispersing gel evenly as you go and blending out to the very ends of the hair, working your way to the top so that every hair gets equal coverage of the gel.

Step 3 Now you're all prepped and ready to set your hair in what's known as a "damp set" (because hair should be damp, not wet). Start by making an off-center part using the end of a rattail comb. Next, portion off your hair into about eight to ten even sections. The rattail comb will help you carve out these sections, which should be about one to one and a half inches each.

Step 4 Firmly holding each section upward, place a Velcro roller at the end of the hair, rolling it until you reach your head. (Use medium-to-large-sized Velcro rollers, which you can find at drug and beauty supply stores.) Repeat until all sections are on rollers.

Step 5 Bean recommends that you let the hair air-dry if you have time, which should take around 45 minutes to an hour. If you want to expedite the process, use a diffuser attachment on your blow-dryer, which will allow you to dry your hair faster, without disturbing the set.

Step 6 Starting at the base of the neck, remove the rollers. Do not yank them, because you'll disrupt the set, disturbing that delicate cuticle, which can ruin the whole effect. The trick is to gently unroll. Now, flip your head over and spritz hair with a light-hold hairspray.

Step 7 To complete the look, lightly coat your hands with a light hair cream to smooth any rough ends and give a sweet, smooth finish to achieve that side-sweeping bang.
