On these freezing, dead-of-winter mornings, it's hard to find the motivation to get dressed up for work each day. (Let's face it, getting out of bed at all is considered a feat this time of year.) But the first step to avoid feeling the winter blahs is to make sure you don't look blah, and that's where a new pair of cheerful colored tights can come in to update your look in an offbeat, easy way.
The best part about this look is that you can pull it off inexpensively by pairing tights in any bold color with clothing and accessories you already own. Remember all those cute skirts, dresses, and boots you bought at the start of the fall? Don't let them languish in your closet just because it's cold. Tights in an exciting new color (we love berry, wine, and teal, for starters) will inspire you to revisit those outfits and update them with a fresh new twist.
Options for colors and textures are endless. We recommend starting simply with basic Solid Tights (shown in Blue and Purple Lake; both $12.50 at Delia’s). I also love the softness of these Apt. 9 Opaque Microfiber Control Top Tights (just $5.99 at Kohl’s) which come in fun shades like Mystic Teal and Purple Potion. Even red can look spectacular -- try these Joe Boxer Women's Vibrant Opaque Tights ($5.99 at Kmart) in Tango Red. A friend of mine swears by the Opaque Full Tights at Express (a little pricier at $14.50, but you can get a second pair at 50 percent off) which come in subtle-but-still-fun shades like espresso.
There are no rules here, but we do recommend keeping the rest of your outfit fairly simple so that the look doesn’t become costumey. For example, a black shirt, gray wool skirt, and black flats work well with wine or plum-colored tights. You’ll be warm and stylish -- get ready to receive compliments!
How do you stay inspired to get dressed up in the winter? Chime in!
