Get Ready! Inside Fall's Most Exciting TV Pilots

From remakes of Beauty & the Beast and Sherlock Holmes to a sure-to-be hilarious Mindy Kaling comedy, check out new shows to be excited for

Kristin Kreuk grew up before our eyes, playing the lovely Lana Lang on The CW's Smallville. Now 29, she's set to play the beautiful Belle on that network's fairy-tale-inspired, Beauty and the Beast. (This show, by the way, is not to be confused with the animated Beauty and the Beast series that's set to air on ABC).

The series is an edgy, modern-day version of the Disney tale, with Kreuk portraying a New York City homicide detective who solves crimes with the help of a disfigured military vet. And it's just one of several promising new shows that will try to capture our hearts (or, at least, a portion of our TV-viewing time) this fall.

Another detective will be hunting down clues in New York City come September, and he's a famous one: Sherlock Holmes. In CBS's drama, Elementary, Jonny Lee Miller will play Holmes. (No word yet on who's playing Watson.) Will this be the series that makes the 39-year-old actor -- formerly of Trainspotting, Eli Stone and Dexter -- a bonafide star? That mystery is still waiting to be solved.

Kevin Williamson, the producer who's known for both the saccharine sweet Dawson's Creek and the campy, horror-ific Scream, has a new show in the works for FOX, and this one's more scary than cute. Kevin Bacon is set to play an FBI agent pulled out of retirement to hunt down a diabolical serial killer (is there any other kind?) played by James Purefoy, who's cultivating a cult of other killers.

One of FOX's most promising sitcoms could be a blessing for fans of NBC's The Office -- or a curse. Mindy Kaling (who plays Kelly Kapoor on The Office) stars as a quirky Ob/Gyn in a potential new, as-yet-untitled show. Sounds great, but if it gets picked up, we'll have to bid adieu to Kelly, the quirky customer service rep at Dunder Mifflin.

Scrubs star Sarah Chalke has recently endeared herself to TV viewers with her recurring role as Stella on How I Met Your Mother. But now she'll have her own show to helm, if ABC picks up the new sitcom, How to Live with Your Parents for the Rest of Your Life. Her character is a divorced single mom who moves back in with her lovable but boundary-challenged folks.

And who won't be pulling for NBC's new sitcom, Downwardly Mobile, which could reunite Roseanne Barr with her old TV hubby John Goodman? Though their characters won't be married, as they were for nearly 10 years on Roseanne, Goodman will play a good friend to Roseanne's character, who runs a mobile home park.

With so many new shows on deck, there's plenty to be excited about for the upcoming TV season!
