Get in the Swing of Summer!

Although the calendar says it's summer, sometimes the weather tells a different story. Here are 20 fun activities to put in your mind for the warmer days ahead.

  • Plan a picnic.
  • Invite friends over for the first barbecue of the season.
  • Set your breakfast or dinner table with a bouquet of fresh spring flowers.
  • Make homemade lemonade.
  • Buy or bring your lunch to work, and eat outside.
  • Take a walk before or after dinner.
  • Make iced tea, and serve with sprigs of fresh mint and lemon slices.
  • Buy fresh berries, and put them in your morning cereal, pancake batter, yogurt, cottage or ricotta cheese, or salad greens -- or use as a topping for ice cream or sorbet.
  • Plant fresh herbs in your garden or in containers for your patio or kitchen.
  • Make blender drinks.
  • Eat tropical fruit such as papaya, mango or pineapple.
  • Buy fresh corn on the cob at the market.
  • Buy a new set of pastel or floral placemats and napkins.
  • Make a potato salad or cole slaw to serve with dinner.
  • Have ice cream or sorbet for dessert.
  • Buy fresh basil, chop it, and add it to green salads, sliced tomatoes, rice or cooked vegetables such as zucchini. Use whole leaves in sandwiches instead of lettuce, and make a batch of pesto sauce to freeze for use throughout the summer.
  • Have salad as a main course for dinner. Add broiled or grilled shrimp to a Greek salad, chicken to a Caesar salad or sliced beef to salad greens with blue cheese and chopped tomatoes.
  • Make fruit salad to serve any time of the day.
  • Make hamburgers on the grill.
  • Buy ripe tomatoes at the market. Slice and serve as a salad with red onions and vinaigrette dressing, or use slices to top breaded veal cutlets with melted mozzarella cheese, sandwiches or burgers.
