Giuliana Rancic is in good shape after Tuesday's breast cancer surgery. Her husband Bill gave an update to the Today show, where the 37-year-old E! News host announced earlier this week that she had been diagnosed with the early stages of cancer in both breasts.
"Giuliana is a trouper. She pulled through it," Bill, 40, told host Ann Curry during the Thursday morning interview (watch below). "She's relieved to have it over with and get the cancer out. She's doing well at home and recovering -- and I'm adding nurse to my resume. She's having a lot of fun with that."
In preparation for Giulana's double lumpectomy, she and Bill went through an exhausting day at the hospital: a 2-hour MRI, followed by a mammogram, followed by the 2-hour surgery. With Giuliana's breast cancer diagnosis and the couple's repeated IVF attempts, the Fashion Police host has spent a lot of the past year-and-a-half in hospital gowns.
"Between the IVF attempts and now with this, I wish I could carry some of the load," said her husband. "I wish I could take some of the pain away. Watching the IVs go into her arm, watching her being wheeled into the (operating room) was heartbreaking for me."
The Rancics will be headed to the doctor for a check-up on Friday, after which Giulana begins radiation therapy. Remarkably, she's planning on going back to work next week.
"We're viewing this as a gift," said Bill. "It was caught accidentally, very early... When you go through a situation like this, it kind of turns down the volume on things that aren't really important."
Bill says they plan to kick off 2012 with "a new outlook on life." Giuliana has already announced their intentions to continue fertility treatments once she is cancer-free. For now, he says, they're treasuring the messages from women who have been inspired by Giuliana to get early mammograms.
