Tired of the weekly supermarket struggle with your kids over which supersugar cereal you don't plan to buy? Get your kids to make their own yummy granola and, who knows, you may not have to discuss "SuperSugarPuffBombs" for a couple of weeks. Granola also makes a wonderful snack and is great layered with yogurt and fruit for a parfait.
What you'll need:
- Granola recipe
- Flavored yogurt of your choice
- Seasonal fresh fruit, all chopped up nicely into bite-sized bits
- Some pretty, tall glasses
What you'll do:
Follow the recipe. Feel free to add your family's favorite nuts and dried fruits to the cereal. Nuts should be added before cooking and dried fruits after the granola has cooled.
Once your granola has cooled, it's time to fancy it up even more and have your kids make granola parfaits for the whole family. Get all the ingredients ready before you begin this recipe. (Technically speaking you should do that before every recipe you make, not to mention that you should read the entire recipe before you begin. Oops, apologies, we didn't mean to sound like your mother!)
Sprinkle some granola at the bottom of the glass and then put in two or three spoonfuls of yogurt. Sprinkle some fruit over the yogurt. Repeat these layers until you reach the top of the glass.
You can eat these right away, or chill them in the refrigerator. Just remember: The longer they linger in the fridge, the soggier the granola will get. These are great at breakfast (dessert at breakfast? Cool!), and perfect for an after-dinner treat.
Now, don't just stop with the yogurt parfaits. Sprinkle that granola over ice cream and feel sanctimonious. Add to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for a surprising crunch. Mix it with popcorn for a sweet and salty treat when it's movie time. And, of course, granola in a bowl with milk is nice, too.
