To me, the best and most memorable Peanuts special is the Emmy-winning 1973 classic A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, This one has it all -- humor, pathos, redemption, Franklin, Marcie, trademark heavy-handed moral messaging, themes of friendship, grandma in a condo, and Snoopy as a hysterical menu maestro.
If that ping-pong table and folding chair were real, they'd have deserving spots in the Smithsonian.
ABC is airing the special on Thanksgiving Day at 8 p.m. est (though there are some grainy versions on YouTube if you can’t wait). It will be paired with a lesser side dish from 1988: This Is America, Charlie Brown: The Mayflower Voyagers.
To jog your memory, these were the dismaying Thanksgiving plates Charlie Brown and Snoopy served up Frisbee-style to self-invited guests:
- Two slices of buttered toast
- Some pretzel sticks
- A handful of popcorn
- A few jelly beans
Some memorable lines:
"Anyway, why should I give thanks on Thanksgiving? What have I got to be thankful for? All it does is make more work for us at school."
"What kind of Thanksgiving dinner is this? Where's the turkey, Chuck? Don't you know anything about Thanksgiving dinners? Where's the mashed potatoes? Where's the cranberry sauce? Where's the pumpkin pie?"
Lucy Van Pelt:
"Isn't it peculiar, Charlie Brown, how some traditions just slowly fade away?"
"I don't feel bad for myself, I just feel bad because I've ruined everyone's Thanksgiving."
No you didn't, Chuck. Quite the opposite. Now pass the toast, please.
