The traditional graduation cap and gown are symbols of hard work, diligence and academic accomplishment, but let's face facts, they aren't exactly a fashion statement. What can a discerning beauty diva do to make this unconventional cap work for her? We asked celebrity hairstylist Tyrone Traylor for a crash course in the coolest commencement hairstyles that will leave you looking like the head of the class.
The Figure Eight
If you like to wear your hair off your face, this simple chignon is the perfect look for you. Use a hair elastic to create a ponytail at the nape of the neck. Then starting at the point nearest the scalp, begin twisting the hair in one direction until you reach the end of the ponytail. Maintain the twist as you loop and twist the hair back up toward the neck into a tight figure eight. Use hairpins to secure the style.
Sleek & Straight
This modern and minimal style will make those graduation day duds look like Prada originals. Begin by applying a straightening gel to clean damp hair. Then working in segments, use a round bristle brush to blow-dry the hair straight down and out. Once the hair is completely dry, use a straightening iron to reinforce the look. When using an iron, work quickly, running it from the roots of the hair to the ends. Finish the style by applying a silicone shine product.
These soft, subtle curls require hot rollers; if you don't have a set, Velcro rollers can be substituted. Blow-dry your hair straight. Working in sections, roll the hair on the crown of your head forward toward the face. Roll the lower sections down and under. The smaller the roller, the tighter the curl. Tyrone recommends working with the medium to largest size. Once the hair has cooled, remove curlers and finger comb the hair to create a soft tousled look.
And don't forget to bring lots of bobby pins to the ceremony with you. Those caps can be slippery. A few well-placed hairpins will keep yours right where you want it!
