Just when you hoped the political mommy wars were over, things are heating back up just in time for Mother's Day! I thought it was safe to say that the "Ann Romney never worked a day in her life" dust-up was finally behind us, but Republicans have launched a new ad just in time for Mother's Day to remind us all that GOP *hearts* moms way more than those mean old Democrats! Well, at least they *heart* Ann Romney.
The commercial entitled, "Mother's Day: Restore Our Future" is less about Mother's Day or our future and is more about restoking conservative ire over Hilary Rosen's comment on Ann Romney's stay-at-home motherhood. I think most of us can agree we've had more than enough of the tired old "Democrats hate traditional motherhood" talking point, especially in the context of making it a 2012 campaign issue. The Obama campaign is trying to counter the Mother's Day ad with something of their own corny strategy -- donate money to the re-election effort and your mom gets a Twitter message from the President!
But where is the outrage, especially among those on the right, about exploiting Mother's Day for political points? If, as so many of them said at the time of Rosen's slip of the tongue, mothers are to be revered (at least conservative stay-at-home moms), then shouldn't the one special day reserved to honor those mothers be sacrosanct?
Even though I don't consider Mother's Day to be an actual holiday, it is nice to know that I'll get a little break from cooking and laundry for a few hours. It would be a real Mother's Day gift, however, if someone sent the brains behind this new Republican ad to "time out."
