I guess I have to give credit where credit is due; my 5 year old, while sitting in front of my laptop, clicked on a video ad and found a great line of educational videos called Rock 'N Learn. Apparently, they’ve been making educational videos for over 20 years, but they were new to me. My love of Schoolhouse Rock is no secret and I found these videos have the same kind of education through song as the SHR series. Though the music isn’t as brilliant, both my children were mesmerized by the rapping animals and rockin’ nursery rhymes.
The list of subjects available is certainly more impressive than SHR, from phonics and telling time to learning about the human body, foreign languages and even test-taking skills for state-mandated standardized tests. A lot of parents don’t believe in learning through videos and prefer to teach their children using more traditional methods. I’m a believer in, “take all the help you can get.” I know there will be times my kids want to veg in front of the TV or watch a video during a long car ride; why not add some education into the mix? Sometimes a catchy tune sung by a funky monkey wearing shades gets the point across better than flash cards.
