Grey's Anatomy Recap: May 3

Getting Started
Addison drives off to the west coast in a hot ass red car. Cristina wakes up to find her apartment has been turned into wedding central. Both her mother and Burke's mother have arrived to plan the wedding Cristina has never wanted. They even make her ask Callie to be a bridesmaid. I love that Cristina has virtually no friends and therefore needs to ask Callie to stand up in her wedding. Meredith meanwhile tells Derek that she's a different person since the drowning and now is not the time to give up on her.

Elevator Aphrodisiac
When Addison arrives in California, she heads to a Wellness Center. As she gets in the elevator, a super hottie guy gets in with her. She bursts out laughing uncontrollably and tries to explain to him how where she comes from elevators make people horny. Awkward...but pretty funny to us as well. It turns out she's there to visit an old friend, Naomi, from med school who is less-than-thrilled to see her at first. Addison went MIA for a year, and her friend is still pissed. Add tries to give her a line about getting divorced, etc., but the woman is quick to reply that she too got divorced. And just like deja vu, she still works at the wellness co-op with her seemingly uber-successful husband Sam (Taye Diggs).

The Bombshell
Within minutes we learn Addison's real reason for showing up at the center, and it has nothing to do with rekindling old friendships. She wants to have a baby, and her friend is a re-knowned fertility specialist. Whoa! Where did that come from??

Nice Meeting You
Let’s first take a minute to meet the new cast of California characters: Pete (Tim Daly) – a serial monogamist who wants Addison and has hippie tendencies. Naomi (Merrin Dungey) - Addison's BFF from med school who recently got divorced from Sam Sam (Taye Diggs) – Naomi's ex-husband who has since bought a Paris Hilton-like puppy and refuses to hook up with anyone. Cooper (Paul Adelstein) – the co-op's pediatrician who has a penchant for meeting younger girls on the Internet. Violet (Amy Brenneman) -- the psychiatrist who broke up with some guy named Allan four months ago. She's not over him, but he's getting married to a younger girl. Dell (Chris Lowell)- the dude who sits behind the desk and is hopelessly into Naomi.

Mass Chaos at the Co-op
A pregnant woman and an entourage of five or so comes into the center. The woman, Lisa, was artificially inseminated as a surrogate for another woman, Carol. Too bad the same week Lisa underwent the procedure she also slept with Carol's husband, ex-husband and another guy who somehow fit into the group, too. Now, the paternity is unknown. Addison, however, points out the bigger problem: Lisa has not received prenatal care. She steps up to examine her and determines Lisa has a potentially life-threatening condition to both her and the baby. Lisa begs Addison to stay until she delivers.

The Seattle Grace Patients
Meredith’s stepmom Susan is admitted with a bad case of the hiccups and Mer is forced to bond with her estranged father.

Wedding Blues
Cristina is dragged to wedding dress shop and fights with Burke about having the big ceremony it seems like he desperately wants. When Burke tries to tell his mother that Cristina isn’t as cold as she seems, she tells him that she trusts his instincts. For the first time it seems as though Burke might be the one not trusting himself.

Hitting the Baby Breaks
Naomi tells Addy (as she’s now called) that her chances of becoming pregnant via artificial insemination are virtually zero. For Addison, this baby is about changing her life – about taking control back. When she gets the bad news she totally loses it – in the elevator (which has mysteriously begun speaking to her). Did anyone else feel like this was the moment in which you could really see Addison carrying her own show? I couldn’t help but be reminded a few seasons ago when she was the doc in the peach scrubs that we all hated.

Guilty Pleasures
Naomi, Addy and the curly-haired chick don’t head for retail therapy or bar a la Joe’s to get over their bad moods. No, the women wait in the center’s lobby until precisely five minutes to 1pm, when the creepy kid behind the desk shows up with his surf board in hand and washboard abs in full effect. Very Coca-Cola construction worker commericial-esque. But seriously, couldn’t they have found a sexier guy? This kid is like 12!

Hey Brainiac!
As if Seattle's Jane Doe hasn’t been though enough, Derek tells her she’s bleeding in her brain, which could be the cause of her memory loss. He can do surgery, but it’s risky, and there’s no guarantee it will bring back her memory. Poor girl cannot catch a break!

The Quack
Addy calls hot guy Pete out on his specialty in herbal remedies. He tells her to lie down on his table so he can prove to her he’s not a quack. Addison is skeptical about the acupuncture he does at first, saying there is no way it’s going to give her a rush of emotions. Moments later she’s bawling and saying she’s hates L.A.

The Big Dramatic Scene
After finding out that Jane Doe can speak a minimum of three languages, the bleeding in her brain gets worse, and she becomes unstable. At the same time in L.A., Lisa goes into labor. They – with Addison – rush her to the hospital. They deliver the baby, but something in Lisa’s uterus ruptures. Addison saves the day, and tells the whole surrogate, might-be-daddies group, and all they want to know is if the paternity test results are back. Addison flips out on them (rightfully so) and tells them no one is to go near Lisa or the baby until she says so. In the end, Lisa gives the baby to Carol and Doug, and the paternity is never revealed. As all the doctors are commenting on how this baby will have two moms and three dads and how much they all look like a family, Sam touches Naomi’s arm. Yeah, there’s no way those two are done being a family either. Sam had confided in Addison that he had not cheated on Naomi. He woke up one day and just decided he couldn’t do it anymore and he walked out.

Jane Doe’s surgery isn’t as successful. She doesn’t regain any of her memory. When Alex takes her for a walk outside, he tells her maybe that’s not such a bad thing – that others would kill for a clean slate. He looks up at the moon, comments on how beautiful it is, and tells her that she’ll make new memories. “How can you be so good with me?” she asks. “What’s wrong with you that you can’t be this good with someone you have feelings for?” And that right there is the million dollar question. Of course, we all know that he does have feelings for Jane Doe…

Love in Los Angeles
After all the baby-saving drama, Addison winds up crying in the stairwell. When Pete finds her, she breaks down and tells him he’s not allowed to flirt with her because she only has two eggs left and is all dried up. Pete doesn’t run, like most sane guys would. Instead he says, “I’m gonna kiss you. I’m gonna kiss you with tongue. I’m gonna kiss you so you feel it.” Ugh, why does she get all the cute ones?!? When she asks Pete why he did it, he tells her it’s to remind her that she’s not all dried up.

I thought I would hate Addison for leaving Seattle Grace and all of its annoying doctors and drama. But when it comes down to it, I think these new characters, these new California-ers are people I could grow to like… people who might just need to be regulars on my TV.

In The End
Izzie and George wind up in the elevator together. They kiss, and when the doors open, Callie is standing there asking if George is ready to go home. Meredith’s stepmom dies of complications from her surgery (did anyone see that coming?). When she goes to tell her father, instead of the embrace they should have shared, he slaps her across the face. Cristina comes home to find only Burke at their place. She tells him she bought a dress, and he asks if she’s happy. She says yes and asks him the same thing. He tells her he is. Anyone buying that? Yeah, me neither. Back at Chez Meredith, Izzie, Alex and Mer do what they always do – tequila. Derek sees them through the window but doesn’t go in. Meredith has once again shut him out.

And Addison? Addison heads home with an invitation to come back and fill that empty office. Pete and she ride the elevator once again, and she confides to him that the elevator talks to her when no one is around. Turns out, it’s the security guard who can see through a camera what’s going on and likes to mess with people. Too funny. Addison might be headed back to Seattle, but I think that has about as much of a chance as sticking as her refusal of Pete’s second kiss offer.

California, here she comes!
