How do you hype the season finale of Grey's Anatomy? Usually, ABC takes the tease-the-viewer approach. Someone's pregnant! There's a crazed gunman! Big characters wounded! At least one dies!
But for the season 6 finale (Thursday, 9 p.m. ET), the network took another tack. They released a clip of the first 10 minutes of the show, during which all of the above things—Pregnant! Shooting rampage! Wounded characters! Dead!—actually happened. If you'd rather not know the specifics, read no further.
Plot bombs already dropped: Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) is pregnant and on her way to tell dreamy hubby Derek (Patrick Dempsey) the news. Meanwhile, the bereaved husband from a few episodes back -- who blames his wife's death on Derek -- is walking the hospital halls, hunting Derek down and shooting anyone who gets in his way. (Or actually, anyone whose unhelpful manner exasperates him.) Reed (Nora Zehetner) takes a fatal bullet, and the wounded Alex (Justin Chambers) looks like he may or may not make it. Wow.
Here's what makes the jaw-dropping moments even more riveting: They arrive in the midst of more typical Grey's fare: all those relationship dramas that have been going on for months now, and are starting to feel tired. In the opening moments of the episode, we see Christina (Sandra Oh) and Callie (Sara Ramirez) bawl into their cereal bowls over their relationship woes. Christina and Teddy (Kim Raver) act petulant about Owen (Kevin McKidd). And Lexie (Chyler Leigh) is -- big surprise -- annoyed with Mark (Eric Dane) It's just the same old, same old, until…bam! Pregnant! Shooting rampage! Wounded! Dead!
So, has this new promotional technique worked to lure me in? Heck yeah! Meet you on the couch at 9.
