A friend called this morning and told me to watch this PSA on texting and driving. Admittedly, I am the person who usually doesn't want to hear about tragic stories, opting instead to change the channel during any gut-wrenching TV moments. My friend knows this about me, but I could tell immediately by the trembling in her voice that this was something I really needed to see. I watched the full video, which you can find on a number of web sites, including YouTube, and it was truly one of the most horrific wake-up calls that I've ever experienced. Without exaggeration, I had to mute the volume and watch through my fingers like a scared child. Before you read on, please view the PSA.
After watching this video, I asked myself a number of hard questions. What if my child caused other people to die? What if my child was killed? What if I was killed, and my children were left without parents? These thoughts are so terrifying that they left me frozen with fear. For me, a mother of younger children, the thing that affected me most was the car where both parents were killed. Hearing a small child plead, "Why won't Mommy and Daddy wake up?" left a distinct imprint in my mind that won't leave anytime soon.
