Hairstyle Forum: Celebrity Stylists Talk Trends

We love our celebrities, and we love beautiful hair, so we've got to love our celebrity hairstylists! Were they born this way? Only they know for sure, but we'll happily follow their lead. Here we learn what's au courant for fall from three of the best: Frederic Fekkai, Sally Hershberger and Tippi Shorter, and try on these styles yourself.

Frederic Fekkai who has coiffed the likes of: Ashley Judd, Debra Messing, Jessica Biel, Sandra Bullock, and Barbra Streisand, comes from the less-is-more school. He believes hair should be simple to wear and simple to take care of. "Your stylist should be doing all the work for you," he says. He's thrilled to see a more natural texture coming back to hair. Three fall looks he loves:

  • A Lift at the Crown
Frederic likes just a little lift at the crown to enhance volume, which you can do by applying mousse directly to the roots, massaging it in and finger styling.
  • Cascading Waves
The look of soft, cascading waves is achieved by using a medium-size curling iron along with a wave-enhancing spray. Concentrate the bulk of the waves to the lower half of the head, just below the jaw.
  • Side-Swept Bangs
Frederic also loves the look of longish, side-swept bangs. For bangs to lie well, a good cut with graduated long layers is needed, after which you should be able to finger comb the bangs in place.

Sally Hershberger is famous for her modern shag looks. (And for her $700 haircuts.) Her celebrity clients include: Nicole Kidman, Courtney Love, Meg Ryan, Winona Ryder and Michelle Pfeiffer. She loves piece-y layers and hair that's just a touch out of place, which is perfect for her hipster clientele. Here are two fall looks she approves of:

  • A Shorter Do
Some of Sally's clients have been going shorter for fall, reminiscent of a pixie look, only funkier, more urbane. It's freeing and super low-maintenance, she says. Just style with gel. Sally recommends John Frieda Frizz-Ease Styling Gel.
  • A Soft Perm
The new soft perm offered at her salon gives a look of variable movement. Unlike a traditional perm where hair is uniformly curly, the soft perm gives a tousled "just got out of bed but look amazing" appearance.

Tippi Shorter, (917-237-2051) who has worked with Michelle Williams of Destiny's Child, Kimora Lee Simmons, Vanessa Williams, and Fantasia of American Idol, is a California girl at heart. She likes "hair that can blow in the wind as you speed by in your convertible, then fall back into this incredible style." She's known for her excellent cuts and soft, touchable styles. Here are two trends she adores for fall:

  • Super-Size Bun
The new bun for this season is extra large and perfect for both straight and wavy hair. Tippi starts with a side part, using a special cocktail of Pantene Pro-V Texture & Shine Defining Pomade mixed with Pantene Pro-V Smooth & Shine Anti-Frizz Serum to smooth it out, then slips hair back into a low ponytail, rolls hair under and secures it with bobby pins.
  • Invisibly Layered Bob
This looks like your traditional chin-length bob, says Tippi, but when you get a closer look, you'll see it has a lot of long layers, making it ideal to accentuate with pomade if you like '- or you can allow it to hold its shape naturally.
