Halle Berry said she'd never walk down the aisle again -- but that's before Olivier Martinez came along. Berry, 45, recently made her first red carpet appearance since the 46-year-old French actor confirmed their engagement in March. In an interview with Extra!, the Oscar winner admitted that she's surprised to be a bride-to-be.
"Who knew?" Berry said with a laugh when she was congratulated on her engagement. "I swore it off, right? Never say never, people!"
Berry did say "never." In fact, she said it multiple times.
"I will never marry again," she told Oprah Winfrey in 2004. "I mean it with every bone in my body."
And three years later...
"I will never, never get married again," Berry told InStyle in 2007. "Actually it's just that now I've come to a place where I think two people can share their lives without the ring, without the piece of paper."
The actress had her reasons for being disillusioned with marriage. In 1992, she married Atlanta Braves baseball player David Justice after a whirlwind romance, but they filed for divorce after three years.
"This is a painful, painful chapter in my life," Berry told People during her separation. "For four years David was part of my life, every day, every hour. I do keep telling myself that this is one of life's lessons, and as long as I can learn something from it, then all the pain will be worth it."
Nine years after her first wedding, Berry tried again with singer Eric Benet. Perhaps it was the Oscar curse; only one year into their marriage, after taking home her best actress statuette for Monster's Ball, Berry caught Benet cheating. He checked into rehab for sex addiction, but their marriage fell apart nonetheless.
Her next relationship with Gabriel Aubry produced her daughter Nahla and lasted four years -- but marriage doesn't seem to have been on the table. Then in 2010, she met Martinez on the set of Dark Tide, and the rest is history.
Though they haven't announced their wedding plans, there are rumors that Berry and Martinez plan to relocate to France with Nahla this year. May we suggest a wedding on the Riviera?
