Is Halle Berry engaged? It's one of the big celebrity mysteries of 2012, right up there with "Who is Khloe Kardashian's real dad?" In January, it was widely reported that Berry's boyfriend Olivier Martinez had popped the question. Shortly afterward, TMZ issued a counter-story that Berry's new ring was an innocent gift from Martinez, no strings attached. Now TMZ is amending its story, saying that the couple is indeed engaged -- and may be moving to France together!
On Thursday, the website reported that Halle and Olivier became engaged sometime after Jan. 1 (though TMZ is sticking to its story that Halle's flashy emerald ring is not an engagement ring). Now Berry is allegedly planning to move to France, her fiancee's home country, with 3-year-old daughter Nahla. Only one problem: She's still involved in a custody battle with her ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry, who isn't thrilled at the prospect. In fact, TMZ's sources claim that Aubry is "livid" because he believes that Berry is trying to punish him by taking Nahla away.
But Berry may have bigger things to consider than her ex-boyfriend's feelings; namely, stalkers who have threatened her life. Police sources have told TMZ that a man named Robert Hoskins, who has declared that he wants to slit Berry's throat, escaped from a mental institution last week. (Hoskins made a similar threat to Madonna in the '90s, and was even shot by her bodyguard in 1995 after trespassing onto her property.) Another of Berry's stalkers, Richard Franco, was recently released from jail after striking a plea deal. Sources close to Berry say that she fears future incidents, especially because her private Hollywood home has recently become a tourist attraction.
The Oscar winner also has concerns about exposing her daughter to the paparazzi -- which she reportedly believes Nahla's father does far too frequently. This wouldn't be the first time she's criticized Aubry for his parenting skills; for the past year, Berry has been appealing to the courts to limit her ex-boyfriend's visitation rights. In June, she accused him of child neglect; then two weeks ago, news broke that Aubry was being investigated for child endangerment after allegedly shoving Nahla's nanny.
If Berry gets re-married, it might help sway the judge to grant her full custody. Reportedly, Berry has already filed court papers requesting the move, and a hearing is pending. Hopefully, the judge will reach a decision that gives Nahla as normal and carefree a life as possible.
