We know that Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez put a ring on it -- but we still don't know if it's an engagement ring! After the actress was spotted with a new gem on her ring finger, several outlets reported that Martinez, who turned 46 today, had proposed to Berry, 45. Today, however, TMZ reports that the engagement rumors may be false.
According to the gossip site's sources, the ring was a gift from Martinez to Berry -- no strings attached. The sources say that marriage "could be in the cards," and that the couple is in a "committed relationship." However, as of last week, there are reportedly no wedding plans.
This new info contradicts the breathless engagement reports we were seeing earlier this week. Us Weekly claimed that Martinez proposed over the holidays. People spoke to a rep for the jewelry designer Gurhan, who confirmed that the piece Martinez had purchased was a diamond-and-emerald "engagement ring" (although isn't it possible that he just liked the ring, and had no intention to propose?). And pop singer Kylie Minogue, who dated Martinez for four years, seemed to confirm the news when she congratulated them over Twitter -- although she may well have been getting her info from the Internet, and not from her ex-boyfriend.
Oscar winner Berry and French actor Martinez have been dating since 2010, after meeting on the set of the film Dark Tide, due in theaters this year. Sounds like we'll have to wait to find out if they're taking their relationship to the next level -- or just enjoying a shared love of jewelry.
