Sorry, Bachelorette fans: the outlook is not good for Emily Maynard and Jef Holm. Rumors of a break-up have been dogging these two for weeks now, practically since the moment Maynard accepted Holm's proposal on the July season finale of The Bachelorette. Now, a few hints dropped over social media seem to suggest that the couple is done for good.
According to E! Online, Holm has changed his Facebook relationship status from "engaged" to "single" -- and has also removed the 'happy couple' picture he was using in his Twitter profile. (Instead of a picture of Jef and Emily, it's now a solo shot of Jef in sunglasses.) Maynard has also taken Jef out of the picture, replacing her own Twitter profile shot with one that features her daughter, Ricki.
Though neither reality star has come out with break-up news, Jef's recent tweets suggest that something is amiss. On Oct. 5, the People's Water founder wrote, "What comes easy wont last. What lasts won't come easy." (If that statement doesn't appear in the contract for Bachelor and Bachelorette contestants, perhaps it should.) Then on Monday, Holm retweeted this message from pastor David Chadwick: "#God has a way to heal your sorrow. God has a way to touch your tomorrow. Trust him."
Maynard's tweets have been less overtly tragic, though on Monday, she did post a passage from the book of Proverbs -- "She is clothed with strength and dignity and laughs without fear of the future" -- along with the message "Keep on the bright side :)".
Why are Emily and Jef dropping hints of a split without revealing the news? The gossip website RumorFix claims that the couple broke up last week, but is contractually obligated to keep quiet until ABC gives them the go-ahead. "It’s no secret the success rate of the show is horrible," says the site's source. "They are trying to do some damage control.”
Of course, that's only hearsay -- but then, hearsay is really all we have to go on when it comes to Jef and Emily's relationship. In late September, Us Weekly claimed that Maynard was cheating on her fiance by swapping explicit text messages with Oakland Raiders quarterback Matt Leinart. (An E! News source denied the story.) A few weeks earlier, Holm's brother Mike also told the publication that Emily was cheating -- which the couple denied. The reality stars have also shot down rumors that their relationship was a business deal.
At the moment, however, Emily and Jef aren't exactly working overtime to squash breakup rumors. Maybe it's really over this time. Too bad Bachelorette runner-up Arie Luyendyk Jr. has found somebody new...
