Heartburn in Pregnancy = A Baby Born with a Full Head of Hair

Your growing bun in the oven pushing up on your stomach can make heartburn worse, but it’s definitely not triggered by his developing head of hair. “Heartburn is caused by the surge of the hormone progesterone from the pregnancy, causing the valve between the stomach and esophagus to open up widely,” says Mary Jane Minkin, M.D., an OB/GYN and a professor at Yale University School of Medicine. Then stomach acid moves up into the poorly protected esophagus, and you feel the burn. But she says there’s no rhyme or reason as to why some pregnant women develop heartburn while others don’t.
