What's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus about? It's hard to say, even if you've read the official synopsis, which mentions a "captivating, explosive and wonderfully imaginative race against time," three deals with the (actual) devil, and "a traveling show where members of the audience get an irresistible opportunity to choose between light and joy or darkness and gloom." No matter. The trailer has arrived, and it looks fantastic.
Director Terry Gilliam is clearly in his element with this one, telling a fairy tale that's equal parts fantastic dream and garish nightmare. His best films -- including Brazil, The Fisher King and Twelve Monkeys -- have all mastered this balance, while his most recent films leaned too heavily in one direction (the morbid Tideland) or the other (the curiously dull Brothers Grimm).
But of course, the real reason to see this one is to catch the final performance of Heath Ledger, an astounding actor who was lost to the world too soon. Although Ledger shot most of Dr. Parnassus before his untimely death, a few scenes were left incomplete, and the film had to be rewritten. The post-rewrite cast has multiple actors playing Ledger's original role -- and what actors! Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell can all be seen wearing Ledger's mask in the trailer. Still, it's clear that Ledger is the star of this one -- as well he deserves to be. The film opens on December 25th.
