Heating Things Up

“We still laugh like fools every time we talk about [our favorite Thanksgiving memory]. Mom put the turkey in the oven at about 5 a.m. so that it would be done by 12. Grease spattered on the burner and the oven [went up in flames]. My dad and my oldest brother, who was 15 at the time, knew there was only one thing to do—pull the stove out on the porch (dumping all the giblets in the greasy boiling water out onto the floor in the process). We left it out on the porch for about an hour, cleaned it up, brought it back inside, plugged it in, and life was good again. I remember some screaming, some crying, some cussing, some hysterical laughing, running, slipping, sliding and falling. Oh, man, good times.”
