Heidi Klum and Seal have always seemed completely crazy about each other -- so the news of their impending divorce has come as a complete shock. Married for nearly seven years, the supermodel and crooner had three biological children together and renewed their vows in an anniversary wedding ceremony each year. But behind closed doors, things weren't as rosy as they seemed.
"They've had a very rough road lately. They're either madly in love or having crazy fights," a friend of Klum and Seal told Us Weekly on Saturday, before the couple had confirmed their separation.
The confirmation came Sunday night. "While we have enjoyed seven very loving, loyal and happy years of marriage, after much soul-searching we have decided to separate," the couple said in a joint statement. "We have had the deepest respect for one another throughout our relationship and continue to love each other very much, but we have grown apart. This is an amicable process and protecting the well-being of our children remains our top priority."
As for the cause of the sudden split, most media outlets say that the that the busy pair has been under stress from spending so much time apart. Seal, 48, was on a world tour for most of last year, has recently been jetting around to promote his new album Soul 2, and is scheduled to film the Australian version of The Voice in February. Meanwhile, Klum, 38, is about to film the seventh season of Germany's Next Topmodel in her home country.
The U.K.'s Daily Mail newspaper also reports that distance has strained the relationship, but adds another possible reason for the break: Seal's penchant for partying.
"When they had their holiday in Ibiza last summer, Seal hit it hard, was out at clubs and with his friends a lot and Heidi was left with their kids trying to enjoy herself," claims the newspaper's source. "The cracks were appearing and everybody was talking during that trip. He seemed off the rails."
Another source at TMZ claims that Klum got fed up with Seal's "volcanic temper," and that his angry outbursts were starting to affect their children.
Whatever the cause, the split has surprised even their friends and family.
"We are very sad," Heidi's father Gunther Klum -- who hadn't spoken to his daughter before she made the separation announcement -- told Us Weekly.
"All this is just shocking to me," Jason Binn, a friend of Klum's for more than 20 years, told People. "I've only seen them as the most loving couple."
One thing that everyone agrees on is that Klum and Seal were an affectionate, caring couple who remain committed to their kids -- and stayed commited to each other until the end. TMZ says that multiple sources confirmed that there was no third person, and infidelity did not factor into the split.
